When our clients, empty nesters ready to finally make their home reflect them, reached out to us, it started with just a kitchen remodel. But as any good design project goes—once you update one space, the rest of the home starts begging for attention. That’s how this Bakersfield interior design project turned into a full transformation, with the living room and its dramatic fireplace becoming the true showstopper.

From Spanish Style to Contemporary Comfort

The home itself has classic Spanish-style bones, but our client wasn’t drawn to the traditional arches, dark wood, or heavy textures that typically define that look. Instead, she wanted something sleek, modern, and timeless. Think clean lines, warm contemporary finishes, and an updated modern Spanish aesthetic—but without leaning into the old-world vibe.

Our job was to honor the architecture while giving the home a fresh personality that matched the people living in it. Neutral yet sophisticated, approachable yet elevated.

A Living Room Worth Gathering In

One of the most challenging (and rewarding) spaces to reimagine was the living room. With a 23-foot ceiling, the original stone fireplace stretched uncomfortably high, visually overwhelming the room. We knew we had to rethink its design to balance scale, proportion, and flow.

The solution? We reimagined the fireplace surround so it felt impactful but not overpowering, creating a focal point that grounds the space and draws the eye upward in a way that feels intentional, not excessive. The result is a space that finally feels cohesive and comfortable, instead of cavernous.
